To ensure optimal candle performance:
• Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each use.
– Wooden wicks can be trimmed by hand or with a wick-trimming tool
– Wooden wicks create a crackling sound when burned
• Burn the candle for at least 2 hours on the first use
• Keep the candle away from drafts
• Do not exceed four-hour increments
• Always keep a burning candle within sight
• Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep
• Never burn a candle on or near combustible materials
• Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
• Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
• Do not place lit candles where children, pets, or anyone else can knock them over
• Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use
• Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, and air currents
• Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris at all times
• Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room
• Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container
• For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 1/2 inch to 1 inch from the bottom. This will also help prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking
• Do not touch or move a candle when the wax is liquid
• Candles should be placed at least three inches apart from one another
• This is to be sure they don’t melt one another, or create their own air currents that will cause the candles to burn improperly
• One of the safest ways to extinguish a candle is to use a candlesnuffer, which helps prevent hot wax from spattering
• Do not extinguish candles with water
• Always examine your candles container, make sure to cease use if there are any defects (i.e. chips, cracks, fractures, dents) that compromise its integrity.
Safety Measures for Reed and Car Diffusers:
• Do not under any circumstances drink or eat the contents of this product
– Consult with your local poison control if accidentally ingested
• If the liquid touches your skin wash with soap and water immediately
• Do not allow the liquid to touch any upholstery
Burning a candle past the recommended four-hour maximum and beyond 1/2″ – 1″ from the bottom could create serious safety issues.
The National Candle Association warns that a glass jar or container can become too hot causing it to break or shatter and possibly cause a fire as well as other damage. In other words, don’t risk it.
For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 1/2 inch to 1 inch remains in the container.
Here are the most common reasons a wood wick won’t stay lit:
The wick is too long (The #1 culprit): If the wick is taller than 1/8 to 1/4 inch, the flame cannot draw the liquid wax all the way up to sustain itself. It will burn the wood down until it hits the wax pool and suffocates.
The flame is drowning in wax: If a previous burn was cut short, or if the wick was trimmed too short, a deep pool of melted wax can submerge the flame and drown it out.
Charred wood wasn’t trimmed away: Wood wicks need fresh, unburned wood to draw up wax. If you light a wick that is covered in black, crumbly ash from a previous burn, it will sputter and die.
The “memory ring” effect (Tunneling): If you did not let the candle burn long enough during its first light to melt the wax completely to the outer edges of the jar, it creates a narrow tunnel. As the flame burns down into this tunnel, it loses oxygen and chokes.
Quick Fixes to Try
Trim it: Before every burn, snap off the black, charred top bits with your fingers, or use a wick trimmer to cut it down to roughly 3/16 of an inch.
Soak up excess wax: If the flame is actively drowning, blow it out and carefully use a paper towel or napkin to soak up some of the liquid wax pool around the base of the wick.
Fix tunneling with foil: If the candle is tunneling, wrap aluminum foil around the top edge of the jar like a dome, leaving a small opening in the center. This reflects heat back onto the cold sides to melt the stubborn wax ring and level out the candle.
Candle warmer lamps have gained popularity for their safety features which allow customers to enjoy their candle fragrance, maintain an even burn, and extend the candles life without having to worry about an open flame.
For our products we highly recommend candle warmer lamps that warm from the top rather than a warming base which warms from the bottom up.
You should not display your candles for long periods of time in direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting, or other strong illumination. Candles may discolor or fade if they are exposed to extended light for extended periods of time or if stored in warm humid environments
High temperatures (greater than 80 degrees Fahrenheit) will cause candles to soften
Keep your candle in a cool dry area if stored for extended periods of time to prevent melting.
Note: Candles do expire, though they don’t spoil or rot like food. Instead, their components degrade over time, which hurts how well they smell and burn. Most candles have a shelf life of 1 to 2 years before you start noticing a drop in quality.
